Singapore Corporate Counsel Association (SCCA) and the General Counsels’ Association of India (GCAI) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen cooperation between the in-house legal communities of Singapore and India.
The agreement was signed during the “India-Singapore Legal Bridge: Enabling Growth, Investment and Effective Dispute Resolution in a Changing Global Economy” event, held alongside Singapore Convention Week. The partnership focuses on knowledge sharing, professional development and greater cross-border engagement among legal professionals.
Key Objectives of MoU
The agreement formalises the two associations’ commitment to building stronger connections between their respective in-house legal communities.
It aims to create opportunities for:
- Knowledge exchange between legal professionals.
- Professional development and learning.
- Greater cross-border interaction and engagement.
- Exposure to different approaches to in-house legal practice.
A broader goal is to develop a more integrated and resilient legal ecosystem connecting India, Singapore and the wider region.
Cross-Border Immersion Programme
One of the key initiatives under the partnership will be developed through SCCA Academy, the learning and development arm of Singapore’s national association for in-house counsel.
SCCA Academy and GCAI will jointly work on a cross-border immersion programme. Through this initiative, both local and international students will receive meaningful, practical exposure to different areas of in-house legal practice.
This is expected to bridge the gap between theoretical legal knowledge and the practical requirements of corporate legal work across jurisdictions.
Supporting Business and Investment
The collaboration is intended to benefit businesses operating across India and Singapore by strengthening the legal capabilities needed for an increasingly interconnected economy.
A stronger legal network can help businesses:
- Navigate cross-border investment opportunities with greater confidence.
- Manage international transactions more effectively.
- Understand and handle legal requirements across jurisdictions.
- Resolve cross-border disputes more efficiently.
Singapore Corporate Counsel Association (SCCA)
It is the national association representing and advancing the interests of in-house counsel in Singapore.
With a growing membership and an extensive regional network, SCCA works to strengthen the in-house legal profession through:
- Thought-leadership conferences.
- Professional networking events.
- Professional development programmes.
- Leadership initiatives.
- Industry dialogues.
Its SCCA Academy provides practical and industry-focused learning programmes designed to equip in-house counsel with the skills, knowledge and perspectives required to respond to changes in the legal and business environment.
General Counsels’ Association of India (GCAI)
It is an organisation formed, managed and led by in-house legal counsel. Its vision is to establish a distinct professional identity for General Counsels and institutionalise the in-house legal function as a specialised stream of legal practice.
GCAI represents the interests of in-house legal professionals who are qualified lawyers holding law degrees recognised by the Bar Council of India.
