Union Minister Jitendra Singh launched BIO-NIVESH, a strategic platform designed to strengthen collaboration between biotechnology innovators and investors and increase the flow of private capital into promising biotechnology innovations.
The initiative recognises that innovation needs investment to reach the market, while investment requires strong innovation to remain sustainable. BIO-NIVESH therefore seeks to bring innovators, investors, industry and government closer together to support India’s biotechnology-led growth.
Bridging Biotechnology Innovation and Investment
BIO-NIVESH aims to help promising ideas move beyond the stages of research and entrepreneurship towards:
- Industry adoption
- Commercialisation
- Large-scale deployment
- Access to wider markets
The initiative is also intended to position India to take advantage of opportunities emerging from the next wave of technology-driven growth.
How BIO-NIVESH Works?
The platform goes beyond the conventional model of simply pitching startups to investors. It has been designed as a two-way engagement mechanism.
It enables:
- Innovators to understand how investors assess opportunities, including factors such as scalability, market potential and investment readiness.
- Investors to gain a deeper understanding of biotechnology’s scientific, regulatory and development pathways.
Inaugural Edition
The first edition brought together:
- 20 high-potential biotechnology/deep-tech startups
- Around 50 selected investors
The startups were chosen based on factors such as innovation, stage of development, market potential, scalability and regulatory readiness.
The programme had two major sessions:
- Startup–Investor Connect: The participating startups directly interacted with investors.
- Ministerial Interactive Session: Jitendra Singh engaged with startups and investors on issues including access to capital, commercialisation, scale-up and policy/enabling measures needed for innovation-led growth.
BIO-NIVESH as a Recurring Platform
BIO-NIVESH is not planned as a one-time initiative. Subsequent editions are proposed across different cities to:
- Expand participation beyond the initial ecosystem.
- Connect regional biotechnology innovation hubs with investment networks.
- Create sustained interaction between innovators and investors.
- Strengthen the pathway from biotechnology research to commercial-scale applications.
