National Wildlife Day 2026: 4 September

National Wildlife Day 2026 was observed on 4 September 2026, with the objective of creating awareness about wildlife conservation, endangered species and habitat protection.

The observance encourages people to look beyond the stereotypical image of wildlife and recognise the ecological importance of birds, insects, mammals and other forms of wildlife in maintaining healthy ecosystems.

History and Significance

National Wildlife Day was established in 2005 by Colleen Paige, an animal behaviourist and philanthropist, to promote public awareness about wildlife conservation and endangered species.

The observance is associated with two dates- 4 September and 22 February:

  • 4 September is linked to the birthday of wildlife conservationist Steve Irwin.
  • 22 February is also observed in his memory and honours his contribution to global wildlife conservation.
  • The second date was added by Colleen Paige following Steve Irwin’s death in 2006.

Thus, National Wildlife Day is observed twice a year, on 22 February and 4 September.

Major Threats to Wildlife

The observance highlights the growing threats posed by human activities and environmental changes, including:

  • Habitat destruction and loss
  • Pollution
  • Climate change
  • Illegal exploitation and hunting
  • Commercial exploitation of wildlife
  • Removal of animals from their natural habitats
  • Captive breeding for commercial purposes
  • Use of wildlife in entertainment and tourism
  • Exploitation for traditional medicine
  • The exotic pet trade
  • Ocean exploitation, which puts marine wildlife and their habitats at risk
