nPROUD: Kerala launches India’s first Safe Disposal of Expired Medicines

Kerala launched nPROUD (New Programme for Removal of Unused Drugs), a first-of-its-kind initiative in India for the scientific disposal of expired and unused medicines. The State Drugs Control Department has taken this step to prevent environmental pollution, health hazards, and antimicrobial resistance. The project will initially be implemented in Kozhikode Corporation and Ulliyeri Panchayat, with plans for a statewide rollout in phases.

Key Highlights of ‘nPROUD’

  • First government-led initiative in India for the systematic collection and disposal of unused medicines.
  • Aims to prevent environmental pollution, health risks, and antimicrobial resistance.
  • Follows Biomedical Waste Management Act and Rules to ensure safe and eco-friendly disposal.

Why is ‘nPROUD’ Needed?

  • Unscientific disposal of medicines in soil and water leads to antimicrobial resistance, health issues, and pollution.
  • No existing system for collecting and processing unused medicines in India.
  • Ensures proper waste management, protecting both public health and the environment.

How Will the Collection Work?

  • Households: Unused medicines will be collected at scheduled intervals, and the public can drop them in designated blue boxes.
  • Pharmacies & Clinics: Wholesale and retail pharmacies, as well as clinics, must bring their expired stock to pre-assigned collection centers.
  • Implementation Partners: The project will be executed with the support of local bodies and Haritha Karma Sena members.

Scientific Disposal Process

  • All collected medicines will be processed at the Kerala Enviro Infrastructure Limited (KEIL) waste treatment plant, approved by central and state environment departments.
  • The entire process complies with the Biomedical Waste Management Act, ensuring proper treatment and minimal environmental impact.

Significance of Initiative

  • Pioneering step in India toward responsible pharmaceutical waste management.
  • Helps mitigate antimicrobial resistance, a growing global health concern.
  • Reduces environmental pollution caused by the improper disposal of medicines.
  • With ‘nPROUD’, Kerala sets a national example in ensuring the safe and eco-friendly disposal of pharmaceutical waste, reinforcing the state’s commitment to sustainability and public health.
