IIT Madras has unveiled India’s first Hyperloop Test Track with support from the Ministry of Railways. This milestone brings high-speed travel closer to reality, positioning India among the global leaders in Hyperloop research and development.
About the Hyperloop Test Track
Location: IIT Madras
Track Length: 422 meters
Purpose: Designed for high-speed transport research and testing Hyperloop technology.
Speed Potential: Hyperloop pods are expected to reach speeds of 1,200 km/h, significantly reducing travel times between major cities.
Significance: Hyperloop is considered the fifth mode of transportation, providing a faster, energy-efficient, and sustainable alternative to traditional rail and air travel.
Impact on Travel:
- Delhi to Jaipur (approx. 300 km) – in under 30 minutes.
- Bengaluru to Chennai (approx. 350 km) – in just 30 minutes.
How Hyperloop Technology Works
Concept: A high-speed transport system using electromagnetically levitated pods inside a low-pressure vacuum tube.
Eliminates Resistance: The vacuum environment removes air resistance and friction, allowing speeds of up to Mach 1 (1,225 km/h at sea level).
Energy Efficiency: Can achieve twice the speed of an aircraft while consuming less energy.
Global Hyperloop Projects: Currently, eight hyperloop projects are in various stages of development worldwide. Leading Companies:
- Virgin Hyperloop (testing in Nevada, USA).
- TransPod (developing a test track in Canada).
History of the Hyperloop Concept:
- First proposed in the 1970s by Swiss professor Marcel Juffer.
- Swissmetro SA attempted development but ceased operations in 2009.
- Elon Musk, CEO of SpaceX and Tesla, revived interest in 2013 through his whitepaper ‘Hyperloop Alpha’.
Hyperloop Competition at IIT Madras
Event: Asia’s first Global Hyperloop Competition (GHC) 2025.
Participants: 10 Hyperloop teams with 200 students from around the world.
Organizers:
