India & Belgium Form JV for Light Tank Program

India’s Electro Pneumatics and Hydraulics Ltd (EPHL) and Belgium’s John Cockerill Defence (JCD) have formed a joint venture (JV) to manufacture turrets for the Indian Army’s Zorawar light tank program. This initiative aims to strengthen India’s defence capabilities, particularly in high-altitude and extreme terrain conditions.

Key Highlights of Joint Venture:

  • The JV will manufacture, assemble, and commission turrets for India’s Zorawar light tank program.
  • The turret, a critical rotating armoured structure housing the tank’s main weapon, will be produced in India under a 60:40 partnership, with Belgium’s JCD providing technology and EPHL managing production.
  • Apart from the Indian Army, the JV aims to explore export opportunities for these turrets.

About Zorawar Light Tank:

  • Development: Initiated after the Galwan clash, the Zorawar light tank project is in its final trial phase, with production set to begin soon.
  • Manufacturing: The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and Larsen & Toubro (L&T) are leading the tank’s development at Hazira, Gujarat.
  • Induction Timeline: The first Zorawar light tank is expected to be delivered by 2027, with the Army planning to induct 350 units under Project Zorawar.

Key Features of Zorawar Light Tank:

Adaptability: Designed for easy transportation by road and rail; capable of operating in extreme temperature conditions, from high-altitude regions to deserts.

Combat Capability:

  • Equipped with a world-class turret developed under the India-Belgium collaboration.
  • Features gun-launched anti-tank guided missiles (ATGMs) and multi-purpose smart munitions.
  • Advanced protection against aerial threats, UAVs, and armoured vehicles.
  • Crew capacity of 2 to 3 personnel.

Deployment: Primarily intended for mountainous border areas, especially along the Line of Actual Control (LAC), with potential for increased numbers.

Strategic Importance:

India’s Zorawar light tank will counter China’s Type 15 (ZTQ-15) light tanks, which are already deployed across the LAC.

The JV strengthens India’s defence industry by enhancing self-reliance in tank manufacturing and supporting export potential.
