WMO Launches iClimateAction Project to Boost Global Climate Intelligence

The World Meteorological Organization (WMO), in collaboration with the Global Climate Observing System (GCOS), Group on Earth Observations (GEO), and the European Commission, has launched the iClimateAction project. The initiative, backed by the Horizon Europe Work Programme (2023-2025), aims to enhance global coordination in climate data management.

About iClimateAction Project

Objective:

  • Improve the global climate observation system by making climate data standardized, open, accessible, and interoperable.
  • Address the fragmentation in climate observation networks and enhance knowledge sharing for climate action.

Funding Details:

  • Total Budget: €3 million
  • WMO Contribution: €1 million

WMO’s Long-Term Goals Supported by iClimateAction:

  • Climate Resilience & Adaptation
  • Disaster Risk Reduction
  • Global Framework for Climate Services
  • WMO Integrated Global Observing System
  • Governance of Climate Intelligence

Focus Areas:

  • Climate Observations
  • Data Management & Interoperability
  • Service Delivery for Climate Intelligence
  • Early Warning Systems

Major Initiatives under iClimateAction

  1. Global Heat Resilience Service:
    • Direct response to the UN Secretary-General’s Call to Action on Extreme Heat.
    • Provides real-time data to help cities protect public health from heatwaves and extreme weather.
  2. Global Ecosystems Atlas:
    • First-of-its-kind open-access resource to consolidate global ecosystem data.
    • Supports climate adaptation, mitigation, and nature-based solutions.

Alignment with Global Climate Efforts

Supports flagship climate resilience initiatives like:

  • Early Warnings for All – Ensuring every country has access to disaster early warning systems.
  • Global Greenhouse Gas Watch – Strengthening global monitoring of carbon emissions.

Integrates with GEO’s key projects, transforming climate intelligence into actionable strategies.

Significance of iClimateAction

  • Strengthens global cooperation on climate data governance.
  • Benefits 193 member states & territories by improving access to scientific climate data.
  • Addresses fragmentation in climate data collection, ensuring Essential Climate Variables (ECVs) are standardized & accessible.
  • Supports scientists, policymakers, and communities in making data-driven climate action decisions.
  • Coincides with WMO’s 75th anniversary (2025), showcasing WMO’s commitment to science-driven climate solutions.

At a time when climate risks are escalating, the iClimateAction project will play a crucial role in turning climate data into real-world impact and strengthening global climate resilience.
