Sarhul Festival 2025: Jharkhand’s Tribal New Year Celebration

Sarhul, tribal festivals of Jharkhand, marks the beginning of  new year for indigenous communities practicing Sarna religion. The festival is deeply rooted in nature worship, celebrating onset of spring and fertility. In 2025, Sarhul was observed on April 1.

What is Sarhul?

The festival symbolizes arrival of spring and is associated with tree worship, especially Saal tree (Shorea robusta).

The festival is primarily celebrated by the Oraon, Munda, and Ho tribes across Jharkhand.

The festival lasts for three days, from third day of Shukla Paksha in Chaitra month to Chaitra Purnima.

According to tribal beliefs, Sarhul signifies the sacred union of the Earth and the Sun, ensuring prosperity and fertility.

The festival has different names among various tribal communities:

  • Khaddi – Kurukh community
  • Hadi Bonga – Bhumij community
  • Baa Parab – Ho and Munda tribes
  • Baha Parab – Santals

Rituals and Traditions of Sarhul

The village priest, known as Pahan, performs the main rituals under the Saal tree. Offerings include:

  • Flowers, fruits, vermilion, a rooster, and “tapan” (local liquor)
  • These are offered to the Sun, village deity, and ancestors for prosperity and protection.

After rituals, locals carry Sal flowers while dancing in celebration. One of main highlights is “Baa Porob“, a flower festival and worship of the Saal tree.

New crops such as flowers, fruits, paddy, and leaves are brought as offerings.

Animal sacrifices (roosters, goats, or birds) are sometimes made as part of the rituals.

Cultural Celebrations of Sarhul

The festival is widely celebrated with folk dances, music, and rituals.

Traditional dances and songs are performed by the tribal communities, showcasing their rich cultural heritage, accompanied by tribal drum beats.

People wear vibrant traditional clothing, adorned with flowers and jewelry.

Festive Delicacies

  • Handia – A traditional rice-based fermented drink.
  • Fish Sukha – A dried or baked fish dish.
  • Various vegetables, mushrooms, fruits, seeds, and leaves are cooked as seasonal delicacies, marking the arrival of spring.
