Procedure for Renaming of a City

A resolution is raised by a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA).

The State Assembly deliberates and discusses consequences.

If passed by simple majority, the resolution is considered approved.

The State Legislature then makes the necessary official changes.

Renaming Of State (As per Constitution):

Article 3 & 4 of the Indian Constitution governs this process.

A bill to rename a state is introduced in Parliament on the President’s recommendation.

The President seeks the view of the concerned state legislature.

Views are not binding, but considered important.

The bill is passed by simple majority in both houses of Parliament. After the President’s assent, the new name becomes official.
