GI Recognition for 7 New West Bengal Products

West Bengal has secured Geographical Indication (GI) tags for seven new traditional products, raising the state’s total GI-tagged items to 33. This move is expected to boost the local economy and promote global recognition of Bengal’s heritage.

Nolen Gurer Sandesh (Sweetmeat)Made from fresh chhena and nolen gur (date palm jaggery); known for its caramel-like flavor and golden hue. A seasonal winter delicacy. 
Murshidabad Chhanabora (Sweet)Made only from chhena (no khoya), cardamom-flavored; soft, textured sweet prepared during festivals. Murshidabad Chhanabora differs from other sweets by using only chhena (no khoya).
Kamarpukur’s Sada Bonde (Sweet)White version of bonde, made with wheat flour, sugar, and ghee. Crisp texture; linked to Sri Ramakrishna.
Bishnupur’s Motichur Laddu (Sweet)Made from chickpea flour, sugar, ghee, and Piyal seed flour. Has a nutty aroma; enjoyed during Durga Puja.
Baruipur Guava (Fruit)Bigger, juicier, and crispier than common varieties. Known for its sweetness; used in juices and desserts. It stands out for its round shape, juicy pulp, and sweet taste.
Radhunipagal Rice (Cereal Crop)Aromatic, winter-season rice. Dense and filling; used in traditional Bengali meals.
Malda’s Nistari Silk Yarn (Textile)Fine-textured, durable silk made from Nistari mulberry silkworms. Used for luxurious garments. Nistari silk is a product of Malda.

  • GI tag is a legal recognition under the Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act, 1999.
  • It certifies that a product originates from a specific geographical area and possesses qualities or a reputation due to that origin.
  • GI Tags are awarded by: Geographical Indications Registry, Chennai (under DPIIT).
  • More than 500 products across India have GI tags so far.
