Nicaragua Quits UNESCO over Press Freedom Award 2025

The Nicaraguan government announced its withdrawal from UNESCO after the organization awarded the 2025 UNESCO/Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize to the Nicaraguan newspaper La Prensa. The award ceremony took place in Brussels, Belgium, during the World Conference on Press Freedom.

Reason for Withdrawal:

  • Nicaragua withdrew in protest against UNESCO awarding the Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize to La Prensa.
  • This decision will deprive Nicaragua of cooperation benefits, particularly in education and culture.
