East Timor (Timor-Leste) officially became 11th member of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN)– marking bloc’s first expansion since 1999. The membership was formalized when leaders of ASEAN’s 10 member countries signed a declaration during the opening ceremony of the 47th ASEAN Summit and Related Summits in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
Following the declaration, Timor-Leste’s national flag was placed alongside the flags of existing ASEAN member states- symbolizing its formal induction.

Background
Colonial Rule:
