Central Warehousing Corporation celebrates 70th Foundation Day

The Central Warehousing Corporation (CWC), a Central Public Sector Enterprise under the  Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution, recently celebrated its 70th  Foundation Day.  

On this occasion, CWC’s performance overview for FY 2024–25 was presented. It achieved  highest-ever turnover of ₹2,776.88 crore and Profit Before Tax (PBT) of ₹711.60 crore during  FY 2024–25, compared to ₹2,303.81 crore turnover and ₹590.36 crore PBT in FY 2023–24. A  dividend of ₹160.10 crore has been proposed and paid for the year. 

About Central Warehousing Corporation (CWC) 

  • Legal Status: It is premier statutory body under the Warehousing Corporation Act,  1962. 
  • Established Year: 1957 
  • CPSE Status: Navratna Central Public Sector Enterprise (CPSE)  
  • Parent Ministry: Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution,  Government of India.  
  • Mandate: To provide reliable, cost-effective, and integrated warehousing and  logistics solutions.  
Key objectives include: 
  • Strengthening Food Security: Maintaining buffer stocks to support the nation’s food  security framework. 
  • Reducing Post-Harvest Losses: Assisting farmers in reducing losses through scientific  storage and pest control. 
  • Market Facilitation: Acting as a leading market facilitator by integrating warehousing  infrastructure across the supply chain.
  • Credit Accessibility: Enabling credit through negotiable warehouse receipts (NWRs)  to improve liquidity in rural areas. 
Functions of CWC:

It performs a range of operational and commercial functions 

  • Scientific Storage: Building and managing warehouses for over 400 commodities,  including perishables in cold storage and industrial goods. 
  • Total Warehouses: 741 directly operated units with a storage capacity of 149.0 lakh  MT
  • State Associates: Partners with 19 State Warehousing Corporations (SWCs), which  operate an additional 2,264 warehouses 
  • EXIM Logistics: Operating Container Freight Stations (CFSs), Inland Clearance Depots  (ICDs), and Air Cargo Complexes to facilitate international trade. 
  • Pest Control Services: Providing specialized disinfestation and fumigation  services for farmers, exporters, and government agencies. 
  • Farmers Extension Service Scheme (FESS): Educating farmers on scientific  preservation techniques and offering rebates on storage charges. 
  • Consultancy & Training: Offering expert advice on storage problems and preparation  of techno-economic feasibility reports for warehousing projects. 
  • Public Distribution Support: Assisting in the procurement and distribution of  essential commodities under the Public Distribution System (PDS).
