Union Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports is organising nationwide athletics league at 250 locations under the ASMITA (Achieving Sports Milestone by Inspiring Women Through Action) programme on the occasion of International Women’s Day (8 March) to celebrate women in sports.
About ASMITA Athletics League
Objective: To promote greater participation of women in competitive sports and strengthen grassroots talent identification.
Implementation Mechanism: The athletics league will be implemented in collaboration with:
- MY Bharat
- Khelo India Centres (KICs)
- SAI ecosystem and National Centres of Excellence (NCOEs)
- State and District Sports Associations
- District Youth Officers (DYOs)
About ASMITA Programme
It is part of the broader Khelo India mission and focuses specifically on promoting women’s participation in sports through structured leagues and competitions.

- Objective: Increase participation of women and identify new sporting talent nationwide.
- ]Operates across multiple age groups at zonal and national levels.
The Sports Authority of India (SAI) supports National Sports Federations in conducting Khelo India women’s leagues.
Scale and Achievements of ASMITA
Since its launch in 2021:
- Over 2,600 leagues have been conducted.
- Covered 34 sports disciplines.
- Reached more than 550 districts.
- Held in over 700 cities across India.
The programme serves as a platform for scouting and nurturing emerging female athletes from across the country.
