National Health Claims Exchange

The National Health Authority (NHA) has successfully conducted the NHCX Hackathon organised under the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM) to promote innovation around the National Health Claims Exchange (NHCX).  It was organised in collaboration with ecosystem partners, including

  • Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI)
  • IIT Hyderabad
  • National Resource Centre for EHR Standards (NRCeS)
  • General Insurance Council (GIC)
  • Google
  • Insurance Information Bureau (IIB)
  • National Accreditation Board for Hospitals and Healthcare Providers (NABH)
  • India Insurtech Association (IIA)
  • NATHealth

It had invited participants to develop solutions addressing key operational challenges in health insurance claims processing and ecosystem interoperability.

About National Health Claims Exchange (NHCX)

  • It is a unified digital infrastructure designed to standardize, streamline and seamless exchange of insurance claims data among hospitals, insurance companies, and patients.
Vision:
  • To create a unified, transparent, and interoperable ecosystem that connects insurers, providers, and patients to ensure faster, efficient, and reliable cashless claim settlements.
Developed under
  • The Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM) by the National Health Authority (NHA)
    • It is one of the three gateways under ABDM, built to simplify and standardise health insurance claims processing across the country. Other two are
      • Unified Health Interface (UHI): Described as “UPI for healthcare,” it enables interoperability across health services, allowing patients to search, book, and avail of services (like teleconsultation).
      • Health Information Exchange and Consent Manager (HIE-CM): This gateway manages user consent for sharing personal health data, enabling secure and standardized flow of health information between different entities.
Nodal Implementing Agency:
  • It is being implemented in collaboration with the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI)
Key Aspects of NHCX Vision:
  • Unified Digital Platform: Functions as a central gateway for seamless data exchange between hospitals, insurers, and TPAs, reducing the burden of managing multiple, inconsistent portals.
  • Standardization & Interoperability:**Uses Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources (FHIR) standards to ensure that data is machine-readable, auditable, and easily shared across diverse systems.
  • Efficiency & Transparency: Enables real-time tracking, reduced paperwork, and faster processing, aligning with the IRDAI’s goal of “Insurance for All by 2047”.
  • Reduced Out-of-Pocket Expenses: Aims to enhance the “Cashless Everywhere” initiative, making it easier for patients to receive cashless treatment at non-network hospitals.
  • Incentivizing Digitization: Supports the Digital Health Incentive Scheme (DHIS) to encourage hospitals to digitize claims, improving trust and reducing fraud.
