Saba Shawl: First Kashmiri Woman to Head Central Jail Srinagar

Saba Shawl has been appointed as the Superintendent of Central Jail Srinagar, becoming the first Kashmiri woman to lead the high-security prison. Her appointment marks a historic milestone for women’s representation in uniformed and correctional services in the Jammu and Kashmir.

The appointment was made through an official order issued by the Jammu and Kashmir Home Department, and she assumed charge of the position with immediate effect.

Appointment and Background

Saba Shawl belongs to the Jammu and Kashmir Prisons Department and was selected through the Jammu and Kashmir Public Service Commission (JKPSC) in 2012 for the post of Superintendent of Police (Prisons).

She is a resident of Peerbagh in Srinagar and holds a Master’s degree in Social Work. Before entering the prison administration system, she worked as a Senior Community Development Consultant at the Government Polytechnic for Women Bemina.

Within the prisons department, she has held several important roles. Prior to this appointment, she served as Staff Officer to the Director General of Prisons, Jammu and Kashmir, and also worked in administrative and public relations roles within the department.

Historic Milestone

Her appointment is significant because she is the first woman from Kashmir to head the Srinagar Central Jail, one of the most important correctional institutions in the region. This milestone reflects the increasing participation of women in leadership positions within law enforcement and correctional services.

The move highlights the growing emphasis on gender inclusion in administrative and security roles, traditionally dominated by men.
