Bharti Airtel has partnered with Google to strengthen digital communication security in India by expanding AI-powered spam filtering to Rich Communication Services (RCS) messaging. The collaboration integrates Airtel’s telecom-grade spam detection intelligence with Google’s RCS messaging platform, enabling real-time message verification and improved protection against spam, fraud and malicious links.
The initiative extends traditional telecom security mechanisms– normally applied to SMS and voice networks- to modern messaging services used on smartphones.
What is RCS Messaging?
Rich Communication Services (RCS) is an advanced messaging protocol designed to replace traditional SMS and MMS.
RCS offers features such as:
- multimedia messaging
- read receipts
- typing indicators
- verified business messaging
- interactive messages with images, buttons and links.
On Android devices, RCS messaging is primarily accessed through the Google Messages app.
Key Objective of Partnership
The partnership aims to improve digital safety and trust in messaging services by:
- preventing spam and fraudulent messages
- verifying business identities
- filtering harmful links
- enforcing user communication preferences.
This move is particularly important as over-the-top messaging services are not fully covered by existing telecom spam regulations.
How the New AI-Based RCS Security System Will Work
Under the partnership, Airtel will integrate its AI-driven spam detection systems into Google’s RCS infrastructure.
Real-Time Message Security
The platform will perform real-time checks to detect spam and fraudulent messages.
Sender Identity Verification
Messages sent by businesses will undergo telco-backed identity verification, allowing users to clearly distinguish between:
- legitimate business messages
- spam or fraudulent communications.
Compliance with Do Not Disturb Preferences
The system will follow users’ Do Not Disturb (DND) settings and classify messages into categories such as:
- promotional messages
- transactional messages.
Messages will be restricted according to user preferences and regulatory rules.
Spam Blocking
Spam business messages will be automatically blocked before reaching users’ devices.
Malicious Link Detection
The system includes multi-layered threat detection that identifies harmful or suspicious links embedded in messages.
AI-Based Sender Throttling
Senders identified as suspicious by the AI-powered spam filters of Airtel and Google will be automatically restricted or throttled.
Security Features of the New RCS Messaging System
The collaboration introduces multiple security layers designed to protect users and businesses.
| Security Feature | Description |
| Verified sender identity | Telecom-backed authentication of businesses |
| DND compliance | Messages filtered according to user preferences |
| Spam filtering | AI blocks unwanted business messages |
| Link protection | Multi-layer system detects malicious domains |
| Sender throttling | Suspicious senders automatically restricted |
| Real-time monitoring | Continuous AI analysis of messaging activity |
These safeguards aim to significantly reduce digital fraud and spam communication.
Airtel’s Existing Anti-Spam Efforts
Airtel has already implemented AI-driven monitoring systems across its telecom network to detect spam and fraud.
According to the company:
- Around 71 billion spam calls have been blocked
- Around 2.9 billion spam SMS messages have been filtered.
These measures have contributed to a 68.7% reduction in financial losses related to telecom fraud on Airtel’s network.
Regulatory Framework
Spam communications in India’s telecom networks are governed by the Telecom Commercial Communication Customer Preference Regulation 2018 (TCCCPR 2018) issued by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI).
The regulation ensures that telecom operators:
- respect customer Do Not Disturb preferences
- regulate promotional communications
- control spam through registration and monitoring mechanisms.
However, over-the-top messaging platforms like RCS are not fully covered under these rules, which has created security gaps.
The Airtel–Google collaboration aims to extend telecom-level protections to RCS messaging services.
Benefits for Businesses and Consumers
For Consumers
- reduced spam messages
- protection from phishing and fraud
- clearer identification of legitimate businesses.
For Businesses
- improved trust in enterprise messaging
- verified communication channels
- reduced risk of their messages being mistaken for spam.
This will help brands using RCS-based enterprise communication build stronger customer engagement..
