The National Statistics Office (NSO), under the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI), has launched India’s first-ever Annual Survey of Incorporated Services Sector Enterprises (ASISSE) from April 2026, covering all States and Union Territories.
Along with the survey, an explainer document- “Know Your Survey: A User Guide to ASISSE”, has also been released to communicate survey processes in a user-friendly manner.
Why Was ASISSE Needed?
The services sector contributes more than 50% of India’s GDP, generates millions of jobs, and has been a major catalyst for India’s economic transformation over the last few decades. Despite its economic dominance, no comprehensive official database existed for the incorporated services sector, a critical gap that ASISSE now addresses.
What Does It Cover?
ASISSE targets corporate entities registered under the Companies Act, 1956/2013 or the Limited Liability Partnership (LLP) Act, 2008. Services covered include trade, transport, hospitality, information technology, education, health, and more representing one of the most dynamic components of India’s economy. With a sample size of approximately 1.21 lakh enterprises, the survey will generate key operational and economic indicators crucial for evidence-based policymaking and economic analysis.
India’s Three-Survey Framework for Non-Agricultural Economy
ASISSE completes India’s statistical coverage of the non-agricultural economy alongside two existing MoSPI surveys, the Annual Survey of Industries (ASI), which covers the registered manufacturing sector, and the Annual Survey of Unincorporated Sector Enterprises (ASUSE), which covers the unincorporated non-agricultural sector (excluding construction). Together, all three surveys provide a holistic view of India’s non-agricultural economy at both state and industry levels.
Legal Framework & Data Collection
The survey will be conducted under the Collection of Statistics Act, 2008, as amended in 2017 and through the Jan Vishwas (Amendment of Provisions) Act, 2023. Data will be collected through a secure web-based portal.
