Ministry of Textiles released study report- “Market for Textiles and Clothing: National Household Survey 2024” conducted by Textiles Committee under Ministry. The survey estimates domestic demand for Textiles and Apparel (T&A) in the household sector and serves as an important reference for trade, industry stakeholders, and policymakers.

Growth Over 15 Years (2010–2024)
  • The domestic demand for textiles has witnessed robust growth over the last 15 years. The total market size grew from ₹4.89 lakh crore (2010) to ₹14.95 lakh crore (2024), registering a CAGR of 8.3%.
  • The household segment’s contribution grew from ₹4.18 lakh crore to ₹8.77 lakh crore during the same period.
  • Per capita demand rose from ₹2,119 in 2010 to ₹6,066 in 2024, reflecting a CAGR of 7.8%.
Fibre-wise Market Share & Growth
  • Man-Made Fibre (MMF) & Blended products lead the market with a 2% share, followed by Cotton at 41.2%, Silk at 5.2%, and Wool at 1.3%.
  • In absolute terms, MMF & blended textiles grew from ₹1.47 lakh crore to ₹4.47 lakh crore (CAGR: 8.28%).
  • Cotton demand grew from ₹0.87 lakh crore to ₹3.53 lakh crore (CAGR: 10.53%) — the highest CAGR among fibres. Silk and Wool grew at CAGRs of 93% and 7.02% respectively.
  • Notably, consumer preference towards manmade fibre products has increased substantially over this period.
Consumer Patterns
  • Women are the dominant buyers, contributing 5% of textile purchases compared to 44.5% by men.
  • The most widely demanded products include shirts, sarees, trousers, salwar kameez, men’s jeans, T-shirts, ladies dress material, shirting, dhoti, and banian & underwear.
  • Men’s jeans emerged as the fastest-growing category in menswear, while leggings emerged as an important preferred product among women consumers.
Sustainable Textiles- A Growing Trend
  • One of the key findings is the growing adoption of sustainable textiles among Indian consumers.
  • Total demand for sustainable textiles (including reused and retailored products) was estimated at ₹37,000 crore in 2024, of which reused/retailored textiles account for ~58% — reflecting growing circularity practices in the sector.
Technical Textiles in Household Consumption
  • The report highlights increasing adoption of technical textiles in household consumption.
  • Products such as masks, sanitary napkins, bandage cloth, tents, seat covers, wipes, diapers, and surgical disposables have seen significant growth in both rural and urban areas. Importantly, rural households account for ~58% of technical textile consumption, while urban households contribute ~42%.
