INS Mahendragiri: Navy Receives Indigenous Stealth Frigate

Indian Navy received INS Mahendragiri (Yard 12654), the sixth stealth frigate under Nilgiri-class (Project 17A), from Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited(MDSL). It is the fourth and final ship constructed by MDSL under Project 17A programme. With this induction, the Navy has now received six Project 17A frigates in less than 17 months, beginning with INS Nilgiri delivered on 20 December 2024.

About INS Mahendragiri

INS Mahendragiri is a next-generation stealth frigate, serving as a follow-on to the Shivalik-class (Project 17) warships. It features enhanced stealth, modern weapon systems, and high automation levels. The ship is named after a mountain peak in the Eastern Ghats of Odisha.

  • Combat Capabilities: Equipped with a comprehensive three-dimensional combat suite:
    • Anti-Surface Warfare (ASuW)

    • Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW)
  • Automation: Integrated Platform Management System (IPMS) for centralized control of machinery and systems
  • Indigenous Content: About 75% of components sourced domestically, including contributions from over 200 MSMEs
