World Day Against Speciesism: 5 June

World Day Against Speciesism is observed annually on June 5 to highlight and oppose speciesism, i.e., discrimination against non-human animals based on their species. The day promotes ethical treatment of animals and encourages societies to rethink human–animal relationships. It should not be confused with the World Day for the End of Speciesism (WoDES), which has been observed annually at the end of August since 2015.

Background

  • The observance is rooted in opposition to practices where animals are treated as inferior for human benefit
  • Historically, animals were widely used for testing pharmaceutical and cosmetic products
  • The label “cruelty-free” emerged as a response to such practices
  • The concept reflects the “othering” of animals, where humans justify exploitation because animals are non-human
Promotion of the Day

Since the early 2010s, organizations such as:

  • People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals
  • Farm Animal Rights Movement
have promoted June 5 as World Day Against Speciesism

What is Speciesism?

  • Definition: Speciesism is the belief that one’s own species (humans) is superior to others
  • Origin of Term:
    • Coined by Richard D. Ryder in 1970
    • Popularised by Peter Singer
  • Core Idea:
    • Animals are excluded from protections against cruelty that humans enjoy
    • Advocates argue for equal moral consideration for all sentient beings
Manifestation of Speciesism

Different treatment of animals based on human perception:

  • Pets (dogs, cats): Protected and emotionally valued
  • Utility animals (cattle, horses): Used for labour or production
  • Food animals (chicken, pigs, fish): Raised primarily for consumption

This unequal treatment highlights the ethical inconsistency embedded in human behaviour

Significance

  • Promotes ethical and compassionate treatment of animals
  • Encourages a shift toward a more inclusive worldview
  • Linked with environmental sustainability, as reducing exploitation helps:
    • Protect ecosystems
    • Reduce environmental degradation
  • Coincides with World Environment Day (June 5), reinforcing the idea that Protecting animals and protecting the environment are interconnected
  • Reducing speciesism is not only about animal welfare but also about long-term ecological balance and human survival
  • It advocates for a world where animals are seen as co-existing beings rather than exploitable resources
