The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), in collaboration with the Colombian government and the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), launched the Agri-NBSAPs initiative. It was launched at the UN Biodiversity Conference (CBD COP 16.2) held in Rome, Italy. The CBD COP 16.2 builds on the momentum of CBD COP16 held in Colombia.
Agri-NBSAPs initiative launched at CBD COP16 in Colombia and expanded at CBD COP 16.2 in Rome marks a significant step toward integrating biodiversity conservation into food production systems, ensuring a sustainable future for both people and the planet
About Agri-NBSAPs
- Agri-NBSAPs (Agrifood National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans) aim to help governments integrate agrifood systems (AFS) into National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAPs) and ensure their effective implementation.
- NBSAPs (National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans) provide a framework for biodiversity conservation and enable the sustainable use of biological resources.
- Countries develop NBSAPs under the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (KM-GBF), which aims to halt and reverse biodiversity loss by 2030.
- Agri-NBSAPs offer a collective mechanism to help governments build capacity, identify strategic levers, and implement biodiversity-friendly policies within agrifood systems.
Why should Agrifood Systems (AFS) be Integrated into NBSAPs?
Achieving KM-GBF Goals
- Over half of the 23 targets of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (KM-GBF) are linked to agriculture.
- Integrating AFS into NBSAPs ensures alignment with global biodiversity conservation goals.
Reducing Emissions from Agriculture
- Agrifood systems contribute nearly one-third of global greenhouse gas emissions, accelerating climate change.
- Climate change leads to habitat degradation and biodiversity loss, affecting ecosystems worldwide.
Safeguarding Food Security
- Biodiversity is essential for pollination, soil fertility, and natural pest control.
- 75% of global food crops depend on pollinators, and biodiversity loss threatens the food security of 3 billion people.
Significance of Agri-NBSAPs in Biodiversity Conservation
- Helps governments align agriculture with biodiversity conservation goals.
- Supports the transition to sustainable agrifood systems that balance productivity and environmental health.
- Strengthens global efforts to halt biodiversity loss by 2030, in line with the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework.
