Bangladesh: New BIMSTEC Chairman for Next 2 Years

Bangladesh has formally taken over the chairmanship of BIMSTEC (Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation) for the next two years. This transition underscores the region’s commitment to enhanced economic integration, connectivity, and sustainable development across the Bay of Bengal area.

Key Highlights from BIMSTEC Summit 2025

6th BIMSTEC Summit Overview:

  • Location & Format: Hosted by Thailand, marking the first in-person BIMSTEC meeting in seven years.
  • Theme: “Prosperous, Resilient, and Open BIMSTEC”—focusing on shared growth amid global uncertainties.

Rotation of Chairmanship:

  • The chairmanship rotates among member states in accordance with alphabetical order of their English names.
  • The transition takes place during the Summit, where the incumbent chair (Thailand in this case) hands over the leadership to the next member in line.

Summit Outcomes

Bangkok Declaration & BIMSTEC Bangkok Vision 2030:

  • A strategic roadmap to make BIMSTEC more prosperous, resilient, and open by 2030.
  • Emphasis on improving trade, transport links, and the well-being and safety of peoples within the region.

Rules of Procedure for BIMSTEC:

  • Introduced to streamline operations, ensuring clearer guidelines for the functioning of the organization.

BIMSTEC Eminent Persons’ Group Report:

  • Provided recommendations aligned with the 2030 vision, offering a roadmap for future initiatives.

Agreement on Maritime Transport Cooperation:

  • Aimed at improving sea transport between South and Southeast Asia to lower shipping costs, accelerate trade, and ease the movement of goods and people.
