The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), established in 1861 under the Ministry of Culture, is the premier organization responsible for archaeological research, conservation, and preservation of India’s cultural heritage. ASI is responsible for excavating, restoring, and maintaining historical monuments and archaeological sites across India, ensuring that these treasures are protected for future generations. Its work is pivotal in uncovering the nation’s history, promoting cultural tourism, and preserving India’s legacy through scientific and sustainable methods.

Adopt a Heritage 2.0 Programme

The Adopt a Heritage 2.0 Programme is an upgraded version of the original “Adopt a Heritage” initiative launched by the Ministry of Tourism in collaboration with the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) and other stakeholders. This scheme encourages private and public sector organizations, including corporate entities, NGOs, and individuals, to adopt and maintain heritage sites across India. This initiative aligns with India’s “Dekho Apna Desh” and “Swachh Bharat Abhiyan” missions, ensuring that historical monuments and cultural landmarks are well-preserved for future generations.

Key Features of Adopt a Heritage 2.0:

  • Public-Private Partnership (PPP) Model: Involves private companies in conservation and management of heritage sites under Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR).
  • Enhanced Visitor Experience: Focuses on infrastructure development, visitor amenities (signage, clean drinking water, seating areas), and digital innovations like audio guides and AR/VR experiences.
  • Wider Participation: Unlike the earlier version, which was limited to large corporate houses, 2.0 allows smaller entities and individuals to contribute.
  • Monitoring & Accountability: Regular assessments by government agencies to ensure maintenance quality and adherence to guidelines.
  • Cultural Promotion: Encourages the development of local arts, crafts, and performances at heritage sites.

Objectives:

  • Preserve India’s rich cultural heritage through sustainable conservation.
  • Enhance tourist experience by improving amenities and accessibility.
  • Promote community involvement in heritage conservation.
