Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has launched Voice over Wi-Fi (VoWiFi), also known as Wi-Fi Calling, on a nationwide basis. The service is now available to all BSNL customers across every telecom circle in India, enabling high-quality voice calling even in areas with weak or no mobile network coverage.
Key Highlights
- VoWiFi service rolled out pan-India across all BSNL circles.
- Enables voice calls and SMS over Wi-Fi networks.
- Especially useful in:
- Homes and offices
- Basements and high-rise buildings
- Rural and remote areas with weak mobile signals
- Calls are made using:
- Existing mobile number
- Default phone dialer
- No additional charges for Wi-Fi calling.
- Forms a key pillar of BSNL’s network modernisation programme.
What is VoWiFi (Voice over Wi-Fi)?
- VoWiFi is an IMS-based (IP Multimedia Subsystem) telecom service.
- It allows users to:
- Make and receive calls and messages using a Wi-Fi connection instead of a cellular tower.
- Supports seamless handover between:
- Wi-Fi network and
- Mobile network (VoLTE)
The user experience remains identical to a normal mobile call.
How VoWiFi Works?
Connection via Wi-Fi
- Smartphone connects to home, office or public Wi-Fi (BSNL Bharat Fiber or any broadband).
SIM-based Authentication
- User is authenticated through the SIM card, ensuring telecom-grade security.
Call Routing over Internet
- Voice is converted into digital data packets and transmitted via the internet.
Seamless Network Switching
- If Wi-Fi weakens, calls automatically shift to VoLTE/mobile network without call drop.
Key Features of BSNL VoWiFi
IMS-based architecture
- Ensures smooth handover between Wi-Fi and cellular networks.
No new app required
