Government of India has constituted an inter-ministerial committee under chairmanship of NITI Aayog CEO, BVR Subrahmanyam to define broad contours and policy framework for National Manufacturing Mission
The setting up of NMM was announced in Union Budget 2025 (February) as part of efforts to further promote the Make in India initiative
Key Highlights of National Manufacturing Mission (NMM)
The mission will cover small, medium, and large industries to strengthen the Make in India initiative.
Five Focus Areas of NMM:
- Ease and cost of doing business
- Future-ready workforce for in-demand jobs
- A vibrant and dynamic MSME sector
- Availability of technology
- Quality products
Objectives of NMM:
- Provide policy support to industries.
- Establish governance and monitoring framework for central ministries and state governments.
- Enhance competitiveness and efficiency in manufacturing.
- Foster innovation.
- Integrate domestic manufacturing into global value chains.
- Develop India into a globally competitive manufacturing hub.
- Support Clean Tech manufacturing.
- Boost design capacity, component manufacturing, and machinery for non-leather and leather footwear production.
Key Targets & Additional Measures
- Increase manufacturing’s contribution to GDP from current 16-17% to higher levels.
- Enhance credit guarantee cover for MSMEs to ₹10 crore (from ₹5 crore).
- Increase investment limit for MSME classification by 2.5 times and turnover limit by 2 times.
