The Directorate General of Training (DGT), under the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, has issued detailed guidelines mandating 150 hours of On-the-Job Training (OJT) or Group Project for trainees in Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) under the Craftsmen Training Scheme (CTS). This provision has been implemented from the academic session 2022–23.
About Craftsmen Training Scheme (CTS)
- Objective: To develop a skilled workforce in India.
- Launch Year: 1950
- The scheme has enabled millions of youth to access long-term career opportunities in various trades.
- Features:
- Provides employment-oriented vocational training to youth.
- Implemented through Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs).
- Certification is provided through:
- Directorate General of Training (DGT)
- National Council for Vocational Education and Training (NCVET)
Background
- Traditionally, ITI trainees receive training primarily through tools and machines available within ITI campuses.
- However, this often limits their exposure to modern industrial technologies and real workplace practices
- As a result, many trainees require additional practical exposure after joining industries.
- To address this gap and adapt to rapid technological changes in industries, the Government has introduced mandatory industry-integrated training components within the CTS framework.
Alignment with National Education Policy 2020 (NEP 2020)
- The reform aligns with the objectives of the NEP 2020, which emphasizes experiential learning, industry collaboration and skill-based education
- As part of restructuring CTS qualifications:
- Annual training duration reduced: from 1600 hours to 1200 hours
- Mandatory OJT/Group Project: 150 hours
This ensures trainees gain real industrial exposure alongside classroom learning.
