Himachal Day 2025: 78th Foundation Day

Himachal Day is observed annually on April 15 to commemorate formation of Indian province of Himachal Pradesh. In 2025, the state celebrated its 78th Foundation Day. This year, for the first time, the state-level Himachal Day event was organized at Killar, the administrative headquarters of the remote Pangi Valley in Chamba district, reflecting efforts to promote inclusion and development in tribal regions.

Historical Background

April 15, 1948: Himachal Pradesh was created as a Chief Commissioner’s province after the merger of 30 princely states post-Independence.

November 1, 1956: Became a Union Territory.

December 18, 1970: Parliament passed State of Himachal Pradesh Act.

January 25, 1971: Himachal Pradesh became the 18th state of India with Shimla as its capital.

The name Himachal derives from Sanskrit: Hima = Snow and Anchal = Lap; Himachal = “Lap of Snow”
