India-Korea sign PoI Shipbuilding Skill Development

Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways has signed a Plan of Implementation with the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) for a landmark project focused on skill development in India’s shipbuilding and marine sector. The collaboration is aligned with India’s Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047 and aims to position shipbuilding as a strategically vital sector for India’s economic growth and global maritime standing.

About the Project

  • Full Title: “Support the Establishment of Development Strategies and to Build a Foundation for Skilled and Professional Talents for the Indian Shipbuilding and Marine Sector”
Core Objectives:
  • Position shipbuilding as a strategically vital sector for India’s economic and maritime growth
  • Leverage Korea’s globally recognised technological expertise in shipbuilding
  • Develop a highly skilled and future-ready maritime workforce for India
  • Bridge skill gaps in the Indian shipbuilding and marine engineering industries
Role of KOICA & Partners
  • KOICA, along with Korea Research Institute for Vocational Education and Training will undertake:
    • Comprehensive industry research
    • Workforce mapping
    • Skill gap assessment
    • Preparation of a master plan and roadmap for human resource development

Proposed Shipbuilding Workforce Development & Technology Cooperation Centre
  • Discussions between MoPSW and KOICA are in final stages for establishing a dedicated ‘Shipbuilding Workforce Development and Technology Cooperation Centre’ in India.
  • The proposed centre will focus on:
    • Industry-oriented vocational training
    • Technical competency enhancement
    • Productivity improvement through advanced skill programs
    • Training tailored to the needs of the shipbuilding ecosystem
  • It will serve as a hub for India-Korea maritime technology and skills cooperation.
