India’s First RoRo Ferry Service Launched in Goa

Goa has launched India’s first Roll-on/Roll-off (RoRo) ferry service on the Mandovi River, connecting Chorao Island to Panaji, the state capital. This initiative aims to promote inland water transport, reduce road traffic congestion, and cut down the travel time for commuters and tourists. The RoRo service is being seen as a green, time-efficient, and safer alternative to traditional ferry boats.

  • The RoRo ferries are named Dwarka and Gangotri, reflecting India’s cultural heritage.

  • Designed by Vijai Marine Shipyards
  • Operated under Built-Own-Operate-Transfer (BOOT) model

  • Connects Chorao Island to Ribandar/Panaji via the Mandovi River.

  • Travel time reduced from 30 minutes to 12–13 minutes.

  • Operates at 10 knots, which is double the speed of conventional ferries.
