L&T to Establish India’s Largest Green Hydrogen Plant

L&T Energy GreenTech Ltd (LTEG), a subsidiary of Larsen & Toubro (L&T), will set up India’s largest green hydrogen plant. The plant will be established at IOCL’s Panipat Refinery in Haryana. Scheduled for commissioning by December 2027, it will significantly reduce carbon emissions in refinery operations.

Key Features of Project

  • Annual Capacity: The plant will supply 10,000 tonnes of green hydrogen per year.
  • Duration of Supply: Supply agreement with IOCL for 25 years.
  • Ownership Model: Developed on a Build-Own-Operate (BOO) basis.
  • Purpose: To replace fossil-derived hydrogen in refining operations, promoting decarbonization.

Technology and Production

  • The green hydrogen will be produced using high-pressure alkaline electrolysers.
  • Electrolysers will be manufactured at L&T Electrolysers Ltd’s plant in Hazira, Gujarat.
  • The plant will operate 24×7 using renewable energy, aligning with India’s net-zero targets.

Strategic Importance

  • Supports the National Green Hydrogen Mission launched by the Government of India.
  • Aims to decarbonize hard-to-abate sectors like refining and fertilizers.
  • Reinforces L&T’s leadership in delivering clean energy solutions and scalable green hydrogen infrastructure.
  • Strengthens India’s ambitions to become a global green hydrogen hub.

Panipat Refinery

  • Location: Haryana (one of the largest refineries in India).
  • Owned by: Indian Oil Corporation Ltd (IOCL).
  • Significance: Key site for energy transition projects in India.
