National Security Day: March 4

  • In 1972, March 4 was designated as National Safety Day, leading to an annual observance.

About National Security Council (NSC)

Formation & Purpose:

  • Established in 1998 under Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee following India’s nuclear tests.
  • Serves as the apex body for national security management in India.
  • Before its formation, national security matters were managed by the Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister.

Structure:

  • Operates under a three-tier system:
    1. Strategic Policy Group (SPG)
    2. National Security Advisory Board (NSAB)
    3. National Security Council Secretariat (NSCS)

Leadership:

  • Headed by the Prime Minister of India.
  • National Security Advisor (NSA) serves as the secretary of the NSC and chief advisor to the PM on security matters.
  • Headquarters: New Delhi.
