About National Security Council (NSC)
Formation & Purpose:
- Established in 1998 under Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee following India’s nuclear tests.
- Serves as the apex body for national security management in India.
- Before its formation, national security matters were managed by the Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister.
Structure:
- Operates under a three-tier system:
- Strategic Policy Group (SPG)
- National Security Advisory Board (NSAB)
- National Security Council Secretariat (NSCS)
Leadership:
- Headed by the Prime Minister of India.
- National Security Advisor (NSA) serves as the secretary of the NSC and chief advisor to the PM on security matters.
