Navika Sagar Parikrama II: INSV Tarini Reaches South Africa

Indian Naval Sailing Vessel (INSV) Tarini, crewed by women officers Lt Cdr Dilna K. and Lt Cdr Roopa A., arrived at Cape Town, South Africa, marking fourth and final stopover in its global circumnavigation expedition, Navika Sagar Parikrama II.

Key Highlights

INSV Tarini will remain docked at the Royal Cape Yacht Club for approximately two weeks for scheduled maintenance and repairs.

The crew will interact with the South African Navy at Simon’s Town Naval Base and Gordon’s Bay Naval College.

Community outreach programs are planned as part of engagement activities.

The vessel is scheduled to depart Cape Town on April 15, 2025, for its final journey back to India.

This visit continues strong naval cooperation between India and South Africa, following:

  • INS Talwar’s participation in the 8th edition of Exercise IBSAMAR in October 2024.
  • INS Tushil’s port call at Durban in January 2025.

Flagged off: October 2, 2024, from Goa by Chief of the Naval Staff, Admiral Dinesh K. Tripathi.

Conclusion: The expedition will conclude in Goa in May 2025.

Mission Objective:

  • Cover more than 23,400 nautical miles (approx. 43,300 km) over eight months.
  • Sail across three oceans and navigate three challenging Capes.

Stopovers before Cape Town:

  • Fremantle, Australia
  • Lyttelton, New Zealand
  • Port Stanley, Falkland Islands (UK)

Challenges Faced:

  • High-speed winds exceeding 50 knots (93 km/h).
  • Rough sea conditions with waves up to 7 meters (23 feet) high.

  • INSV Tarini is an indigenously built 56-foot sailing vessel, commissioned into the Indian Navy in February 2017.
  • It has undertaken multiple long-distance oceanic expeditions, including the first all-women circumnavigation mission, Navika Sagar Parikrama I, in 2017-18.
