Sikkim Celebrates 50th Statehood Day: 16 May 2025

  • Before 1947: Sikkim was a monarchy under the Namgyal dynasty (Chogyals)
  • 1861: Became a British protectorate (Treaty of Tumlong)
  • 1950: Became an Indian protectorate under the Indo-Sikkim Treaty,  with its internal autonomy but under Indian guidance on foreign affairs, defense, and communication.
  • 1975: Joined India through a referendum (97% voted for merger). Became a full-fledged state of India.
  • Constitutional Status: Became the 22nd state of the Indian Union through the 36th Constitutional Amendment Act
