Uttarakhand Launches Bhagirath App for Water Conservation

Uttarakhand Government launched Bhagirath mobile app under Jal Sanrakshan Abhiyan 2025, themed: “Dhara Mera, Naula Mera, Gaon Mera, Prayas Mera”- emphasizing community ownership in conserving water resources.

Key Highlights

Objective:

  • To promote public participation in identifying and reviving traditional and critical water sources across Uttarakhand

Launch of Bhagirath App:

  • Enables citizens to report endangered or dried-up water sources (like Naulas and Dharaas) in their locality.
  • Bhagirath App is part of digital initiatives for environmental governance under Jal Sanrakshan Abhiyan 2025.

Role of SARA (Spring and River Rejuvenation Authority)

Constitution:

  • SARA was formed to conserve natural water sources, including Naulas, Dharaas, and rain-fed rivers. Naulas and Dharaas are traditional water sources unique to Uttarakhand’s hilly terrain.

Inter-departmental Coordination:

  • Established collaboration across various departments to strengthen the water conservation framework.

Achievements:

  • Stored 3.12 million cubic meters of rainwater
  • Treated 6,500+ water sources across the state
  • Ongoing groundwater recharge projects in the plains with help from Central Ground Water Board

Scientific River Rejuvenation Projects:

In the first phase, a Detailed Project Report (DPR) is being prepared (with IIT Roorkee and NIH Roorkee) for rejuvenating: Gauri River; Nayar River; Uttarvahini Shipra; Song River.

The approach involves technical and scientific methodologies for effective and sustainable river treatment.

Jal Sanrakshan Abhiyan 2025
