Uttarakhand Police Conferred President’s Police Colours

President Droupadi Murmu has approved conferment of the President’s Police Colour on Uttarakhand Police, in a significant recognition of excellence in policing. It is highest honour awarded to a state police force in India.

The honour acknowledges the force’s exceptional service, bravery, professionalism, and dedication over the years, making Uttarakhand the 16th state in India to receive this prestigious distinction.

About President’s Police Colour (Nishaan)

The President’s Police Colour, also known as ‘Nishaan’, is the highest national honour for police forces in India. It recognises long-term excellence in policing and public service.

It is symbolised by a ceremonial flag and special insignia, reflecting:

  • Professional excellence
  • Institutional pride and integrity
Key Features of the Award
  • Awarded for exceptional service in peace and conflict situations
  • Recognises:
    • Bravery and professionalism
    • Operational excellence
    • Humanitarian response and public service
  • Personnel are entitled to wear a special emblem on the left sleeve of their uniform
  • Symbolises national pride, tradition, and sustained institutional performance
Eligibility Criteria
  • Police force must have completed at least 25 years of distinguished service
  • Requires consistent demonstration of:
    • Discipline
    • Efficiency
    • Commitment to law and order
Historical Background
  • First awarded to the Indian Navy in 1951
  • Later extended to:
    • Army units
    • Air Force squadrons
    • State police forces
  • For police forces, it represents long-term institutional excellence and public trust.
State-wise Progress
  • Till Independence to recent years, only limited states have received this honour
  • Sikkim Police (January 2026) became the 15th state to receive it
  • With Uttarakhand, the total rises to 16 states.
