Volvo Trucks has introduced India’s first Road Train, designed to enhance cargo capacity and transport efficiency. The initiative is a major step in modernizing India’s logistics industry.
The Road Train, operated by logistics firm Delhivery, has been certified by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) and the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) for operations between Nagpur and Bhiwandi.
The Road Train concept was formally incorporated into Indian regulations in 2020, allowing vehicles up to 25.25 meters in length, significantly increasing cargo capacity and operational efficiency. This technological milestone is expected to set new benchmarks in logistics efficiency, reduce transportation costs, and strengthen India’s supply chain infrastructure.
What is a Road Train?
A Road Train consists of a tractor unit towing two or more trailers, enabling the transportation of higher cargo volumes in a single trip.
- Volvo Truck’s Road Train Configuration:
- Volvo FM 420 4×2 tractor
- 24-ft containerized intermediate trailer
- 44-ft semi-trailer
- Cargo volume: 144 cubic meters (50% higher than standard semi-trailers)
This innovative system aligns with India’s Gati Shakti Master Plan, aiming to revolutionize long-haul transportation by improving efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and cargo-handling capacity.
Technical Enhancements and Safety Innovations
Volvo Trucks has integrated advanced safety and performance technologies to ensure optimal operation of the Road Train:
- Electronic Braking System (EBS): Ensures precise braking and improved road safety.
- Electronic Stability Program (ESP): Enhances stability and reduces rollover risks.
- 360-degree Camera System: Provides complete vehicle surveillance for better driver awareness and accident prevention.
Significance of Road Train for India’s Logistics Industry
- Boosts Cargo Handling: Increases transport capacity by 50% over standard semi-trailers.
- Reduces Logistics Costs: Enhances efficiency in high-volume cargo transport.
- Supports Gati Shakti Plan: Strengthens India’s goal of a seamless multimodal logistics system.
- Enhances Road Safety: Equipped with cutting-edge braking and surveillance systems.
