Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation, Amit Shah, recently interacted with 250 children from J&K under the ‘Watan Ko Jano’ programme in New Delhi. These children, including 62 girls and 188 boys aged 9-18 years, traveled to Jaipur, Ajmer, and Delhi as part of their exposure tour.
About ‘Watan Ko Jano’ programme
- It is an initiative aimed at introducing the youth and children of Jammu and Kashmir to India’s development, social fabric, and cultural diversity.
- Organized by the Social Welfare Department of J&K in coordination with the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA).
- This Youth Exchange Programme seeks to instill a strong sense of social, cultural, and emotional integration among the participants.
Objectives of the Programme
- To expose J&K youth to the vibrant development and cultural diversity of India.
- To foster national unity and integration by helping children from J&K connect with the rest of the country.
- To positively shape the perspectives of young participants and encourage them to contribute to nation-building.
Selection Criteria for Participants
Children are primarily selected from various orphanages across J&K.
Preference is given to:
- Children from terrorism-affected families.
- Destitute children and those from weaker socio-economic backgrounds.
- Youth with proficiency in education, sports, and cultural activities.
Impact and Reach
Since its inception, around 2,868 youth and children from J&K have participated in the programme. The initiative is expected to enhance national integration and instill a sense of belonging among J&K’s younger generation. It provides a transformative experience, offering exposure to India’s rapid progress and diverse cultural heritage.
