Clean Energy Meets Over 50% of India’s Electricity Demand

According to the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), clean energy sources met over 50% of India’s electricity demand for the second time, with renewable energy contributing 50.2% of the country’s total power supply on 6 July 2026.

The government described this milestone as a reflection of the growing strength, resilience, and reliability of India’s clean energy ecosystem. It highlights India’s steady progress towards reducing dependence on fossil fuels, enhancing energy security, lowering carbon emissions, and building a sustainable energy future.

Clean Energy Milestone

Factors Driving Achievement

The milestone has been achieved through continuous expansion of:

  • Solar power
  • Wind energy
  • Hydropower
  • Other renewable energy sources

The government has also:

  • Strengthened transmission infrastructure for renewable energy integration.
  • Promoted domestic manufacturing of clean energy equipment.
  • Encouraged investments in green energy technologies.

India’s Renewable Energy Targets

India has committed to:

  • Achieving 500 GW of non-fossil fuel-based installed power capacity by 2030.
  • Achieving Net Zero emissions by 2070.
  • Increasing the share of non-fossil fuel-based electricity generation.
  • Becoming one of the world’s fastest-growing clean energy markets.

Major Government Initiatives Supporting Clean Energy
