National Panchayati Raj Day 2026: 24 April
- National Panchayati Raj Day (NPRD) is observed annually on 24 April. This year celebrations will be held at Vigyan Bhawan by Ministry of Panchayati Raj, marking 33 years of 73rd Constitutional Amendment (73rd CAA).
- Background: The day commemorates coming into force of Constitution (73rd Amendment) Act, 1992, which granted constitutional status to Panchayati Raj Institutions (PRIs) and strengthened decentralised democracy.
- Timeline: 73rd CAA passed in December 1992, received Presidential assent on 23 April 1993, and came into force on 24 April 1993. The National Panchayati Raj Day was declared in 2010, it underscores grassroots governance for Viksit Bharat.
- Celebration: The day is observed nationwide at state, district, block, and Gram Panchayat levels, with Gram Sabhas promoting participatory governance.

Adi Shankaracharya Jayanti 2026
- Adi Shankaracharya Jayanti 2026 was observed on April 21, marking 1238th birth anniversary of Adi Shankaracharya, born in Kalady, Kerala. Celebrated on Panchami (Shukla Paksha, Vaishakha), it honours his role in revitalising Hindu philosophy.
- Adi Shankaracharya: A philosopher and saint (c. 788–820 CE), he travelled across India, mastering Vedic knowledge under his Guru Govindapada and writing major commentaries early in life.
- Philosophy: Propounded Advaita Vedanta (non-dualism) unity of Atman and Brahman, concept of Maya, and harmony through Shanmata system.

- Unique Identification Authority of India onboarded 100+ entities as Offline Verification Seeking Entities (OVSEs) within three months, boosting secure, consent-based Aadhaar verification.
- Who are OVSEs: They include government departments, fintech firms, hospitality and event organisations, education/exam bodies, identity verification agencies, and workforce validation companies.
- How Aadhaar Offline Verification Works: Using QR codes and digitally signed documents, OVSEs can “Show, Share, and Verify” identity without accessing UIDAI’s central database. This ensures paperless, privacy-focused verification where users share only minimal required data.
- Significance: Enhances digital trust, privacy protection, and ease of doing business through a secure, resident-centric verification ecosystem.

Raw Jute Stock Limits revised to curb hoarding & stabilise prices
- Rising raw jute prices were well above MSP 2025–26 have prompted Jute Commissioner to revise stock limits (earlier notified on 20 March 2026) to prevent hoarding, ensure fair supply, and stabilise prices.
- Revised Limits: Registered balers with press: NIL stock, i.e. must sell by 5 May 2026 and deliver by 15 May 2026. Other stockists, NIL stock allowed i.e. Jute mills: Up to 45 days’ consumption.
- Compliance Measures: Mandatory fortnightly stock disclosure on Jute SMART portal. Authorities are empowered to inspect and seize excess stocks and States to assist enforcement.
- Significance: Ensures market discipline, prevents speculation, and safeguards availability across the jute industry.

3rd edition of AICTE-VAANI Scheme
- All India Council for Technical Education has launched third edition of AICTE-VAANI (Vibrant Advocacy for Advancement and Nurturing of Indian Languages) to promote Indian languages in technical education and research.
- Objectives: To create an inclusive knowledge ecosystem by enabling access to advanced technical content in regional languages. Also to encourage research publications in Indian languages, while strengthening academia–industry collaboration.
- The scheme enhances accessibility and reach of technical education across diverse linguistic groups.
- Key Features: Financial Assistance: ₹4 crore annually to cover 200 conferences, seminars, workshops. Also, institution support of ₹2 lakh per selected institution.

Israel Expands ‘Yellow Line’ Security Strategy

Genetically modified (GM) mosquitoes can block malaria parasites
- A field study in Tanzania showed that Genetically Modified Mosquitoes can block malaria parasites from real-world infections. This offers a breakthrough as conventional tools face rising resistance and malaria still causes over half a million deaths annually (mainly in sub-Saharan Africa).
- Technology: GM mosquitoes are engineered using tools like CRISPR-Cas9 to prevent transmission of Malaria by targeting Plasmodium parasites or reducing mosquito populations. The technology aims for long-term, self-sustaining malaria control in vulnerable regions.
- Gene drive Mechanism: Ensures over 90% inheritance of modified genes instead of the usual 50%
- Population modification (Anti-Parasite Strategy): Introduced Genes Produces anti-parasite molecules in mosquito gut.

- Development: Conceptualised by Abhay Soni. It is developed by Gujarat Police with Gradiante Creative Services, enhancing robust, legally sound narcotics investigations.
- Key Features: Generates Step-by-step investigation plan from seizure to trial. Provides evidence checklist based on offence type. Ensures procedural compliance to avoid acquittals.

18th Civil Services Day 2026
