Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) successfully conducted a high-altitude trial of its indigenous Military Combat Parachute System (MCPS) at Nyoma-Mudh Drop Zone in south-eastern Ladakh, near the Line of Control (LoC). The trial demonstrated the system’s ability to operate in extremely high-altitude and cold conditions.

Development
MCPS was designed and developed by:
- Aerial Delivery Research and Development Establishment (ADRDE), Agra.
- Defence Bioengineering and Electromedical Laboratory (DEBEL), Bengaluru.
Important Features
- Provides a lower rate of descent.
- Offers improved steering and navigation.
- Enables paratroopers to accurately reach designated landing zones.
- Compatible with Navigation with Indian Constellation (NavIC).
- It is currently the only parachute system in operational use by the Indian Armed Forces capable of deployment above 25,000 feet.
- MCPS had earlier successfully completed a combat freefall jump from 32,000 feet.
Significance
The successful Ladakh trial demonstrates India’s growing indigenous capability in high-altitude military equipment and aerial delivery systems. The MCPS can enhance the operational flexibility and precision of Indian paratroopers, particularly in challenging mountainous and high-altitude environments.
