EOS-05 is India’s first-ever imaging satellite designed to observe Earth from a geosynchronous orbit, approximately 36,000 km above Earth.
Once operational, it will serve as India’s first dedicated imaging satellite from the geostationary/geosynchronous orbit, providing strategically important Earth-observation data for the country.
The satellite is capable of imaging across multiple spectral regions, including: Multispectral, Visible, Infrared and Hyperspectral bands. Because of its location and advanced imaging capabilities, EOS-05 has been described as an “Eye in the Sky.”
Applications of EOS-05
EOS-05 is expected to provide real-time imagery and strengthen India’s ability to monitor and respond to various national requirements.
Its data can support areas such as:
- Agriculture
- Environmental monitoring
- Disaster management
- Land and environmental condition assessment
- Other strategic and national applications requiring satellite-based information
The satellite replaces the unsuccessful EOS-03 mission.
Why Is EOS-05 Important for India?
The mission strengthens India’s Earth-observation capabilities by enabling advanced imaging from geosynchronous orbit. Its ability to observe different spectral bands provides more detailed information about conditions on Earth’s surface and environment.
The launch also demonstrates India’s growing capacity to design, develop and deploy sophisticated Earth-observation satellites using indigenous launch vehicles.

The GSLV Mk II is popularly nicknamed ISRO’s “Naughty Boy” because of its uneven launch record. It has completed 19 launches, including six failures. Despite this history, GSLV remains one of ISRO’s most important launch vehicles because it can carry heavier satellites to higher orbits.
Its development is also considered one of India’s major achievements in advanced rocket technology, particularly in cryogenic propulsion.
