Significance
The adoption of Hindi was part of the Constituent Assembly’s effort to establish a common language for official communication and administration in a linguistically diverse India. Hindi Diwas promotes the language’s development and recognises its contribution to administration, literature and culture.
This celebration takes place while respecting the 21 other languages listed in Eighth Schedule of the Constitution.
Several writers and social reformers also advocated for Hindi’s official status, including Seth Govind Das, Maithili Sharan Gupt, Kaka Kalelkar, Hazari Prasad Dwivedi and Beohar Rajendra Simha.
