The Indian Air Force (IAF) has retained its position as the world’s third strongest air force for the fifth consecutive year in the World Directory of Modern Military Aircraft (WDMMA) Global Air Power Rankings 2026. The IAF ranks behind only the United States and Russia, while remaining ahead of China’s People’s Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF) and the Pakistan Air Force (PAF).

WDMMA Global Air Power Rankings 2026

The World Directory of Modern Military Aircraft (WDMMA) evaluates the combat capability of air forces using its proprietary True Value Rating (TVR) system.

WDMMA Evaluation Parameters

The True Value Rating (TVR) assesses:

  • Fleet size
  • Aircraft mix
  • Technological sophistication
  • Logistics capability
  • Modernisation level
  • Overall operational capability

Coverage

  • 129 air services
  • 103 countries
  • More than 48,000 military aircraft evaluated

Key Highlights

  • IAF ranks 3rd among the world’s air forces.
  • Retained the position for 5th consecutive year.
  • Overall military air arms ranking: 6th (including Air Force, Army Aviation and Naval Aviation).
  • Ranked ahead of: China (7th) and Pakistan (18th)
Quality Over Quantity

Although China operates 3,733 aircraft, compared to India’s 1,716, WDMMA gives greater weight to:

  • Fleet quality
  • Operational balance
  • Technology
  • Modernisation
  • Mission capability

rather than numerical strength alone, enabling the IAF to rank higher than the PLAAF.
