Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) is establishing India’s first dedicated Centre for High-Altitude Medicine and Public Health Research at Keylong in Lahaul and Spiti district, Himachal Pradesh. The initiative will upgrade the existing ICMR field station into a multidisciplinary research hub dedicated to high-altitude medicine, climate-resilient healthcare, and biomedical research for India’s Himalayan region.
The initiative supports the Government of India’s vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat by strengthening indigenous biomedical research and promoting inclusive, climate-resilient healthcare.
ICMR Centre for High Altitude Medicine and Public Health Research
Objective:
- To strengthen research, innovation, and capacity building for healthcare challenges specific to high-altitude and climate-sensitive regions. It will serve as a national centre for generating scientific evidence and developing scalable healthcare solutions suited to India’s Himalayan ecosystem.
