India–Poland Discuss Cooperation in Trade, Defence & Technology

India and Poland reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral relations during high-level talks held in New Delhi, focusing on expanding cooperation in political engagement, trade and investment, advanced technology, defence, culture, and counter-terrorism. The discussions reflected the growing strength of the India–Poland Strategic Partnership and the shared objective of deepening economic, strategic, and global cooperation.

India and Poland share cordial and expanding bilateral relations based on mutual trust, democratic values, and strategic cooperation.

  • Bilateral ties have recently been elevated to a Strategic Partnership.

  • 2024 marked the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations between India and Poland.

India and Poland share deep historical bonds dating back to World War II.

Refuge to Polish Refugees

  • During World War II: India provided shelter to thousands of Polish refugees, especially women and children fleeing Nazi occupation.

Jam Saheb Digvijaysinhji Ranjitsinhji Jadeja

  • The Maharaja (Jam Saheb) of Jamnagar, Gujarat, provided refuge to several hundred Polish women and children.
  • They were sheltered at his estate until they could safely relocate.

“Children of the Maharaja”

  • The rescued Polish children are remembered as the “Children of the Maharaja.”
  • Even today:
    • They maintain close ties with India.
    • A street and a junior high school in Warsaw have been named in honour of the Maharaja.

Battle of Monte Cassino (1944)

  • During World War II, Indian and Polish soldiers fought together in the Battle of Monte Cassino (Italy).
  • Their joint efforts helped defeat German forces and opened the Allied route to Rome.
  • This remains an important symbol of shared military history and friendship.
