The National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange (NCDEX) has launched ‘RAINCHNNAI’, a futures-based weather derivative designed to help businesses and other market participants manage financial risks arising from variations in Chennai’s Northeast (retreating) Monsoon.
The contract expands India’s emerging weather-risk market and complements RAINMUMBAI, creating a broader monsoon-risk management cycle covering June to December.

- Rainfall stations used: The CDR model tracks rainfall deviations at Chennai’s Meenambakkam and Nungambakkam stations, using historical IMD data as the benchmark.
- This allows participants exposed to rainfall-related financial risks to hedge against unexpected monsoon conditions.

September is common to both contracts. Although the Northeast Monsoon officially begins in October, including September in RAINCHNNAI ensures continuity with RAINMUMBAI and avoids a gap in rainfall-risk hedging.
What is RAINMUMBAI?
- It is India’s first exchange-traded weather derivative contract approved by SEBI. It was developed by NCDEX in collaboration with IIT Bombay and is based on rainfall observations from Mumbai’s Santacruz and Colaba stations.
- It allows market participants to financially protect themselves against unexpected rainfall deviations.
- Unlike conventional insurance, settlement does not depend on assessing physical damage or actual financial losses. Instead, the contract is settled directly using observed weather data, making the process faster, more transparent and operationally efficient.
