About LCH Mega Deal:
The deal is for the production of 156 Light Combat Helicopters (LCH), aimed at strengthening India’s air combat and tactical support capabilities.
LCH is an indigenously developed multi-role attack helicopter, capable of operating at high altitudes and suited for mountain warfare.
LCH is designed for roles like:
- Destruction of enemy tanks
- Air defence against slow-moving aerial targets
- Counter-insurgency operations
- Escorting and support roles in high-threat zones
Private Sector Participation Model:
- HAL to replicate the LCA (Light Combat Aircraft) model, where private companies like Larsen & Toubro and Vem Technologies manufacture different sections (e.g., fuselage, wings).
- HAL will issue tenders to private sector firms, encouraging tiered involvement of large and MSME players.
- The approach aims to expand the defence industrial base, strengthen supply chains, and enhance indigenous production under ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’.
Strategic Significance:
- Enhances India’s defence self-reliance
- Major Make-in-India milestone in aerospace sector
- Boosts MSME participation in high-tech defence manufacturing
