The President of the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly, Annalena Baerbock, visited India on 28 April 2026. During the visit, India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Baerbock held discussions on key multilateral issues of mutual interest, including: Sustainable development, Global governance reforms, Climate action, Peacebuilding and India’s engagement with the United Nations.
She also interacted with UN Country Team in India, which works on development cooperation, humanitarian assistance, and implementation of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
About Annalena Baerbock
- Elected President of UN General Assembly in June 2025. She became the fifth woman and the first woman from the Western European group to hold this position. One of the youngest leaders to assume the role at age 45.
- The UNGA presidency follows a rotational system among five regional groups, ensuring equitable representation.
- Born on 15 December 1980 in Hanover, Germany. She served as Germany’s Federal Minister for Foreign Affairs (Dec 2021 – May 2025). She was member of the German Parliament from 2013 to June 2025 and Co-chairperson of the Green Party (2018–2022)
- Earlier worked as:
- Advisor on foreign and security policy in the German Bundestag
- Chairperson of the Green Party in Brandenburg
- Member of the European Parliament (2005–2008)
United Nations General Assembly (UNGA)
The United Nations General Assembly is the most representative organ of the United Nations, comprising all 193 Member States.
- Established in 1945 under the UN Charter

Functions and Powers of UNGA
Under the UN Charter, the General Assembly performs the following key roles:
- Approves the UN budget and financial contributions of Member States
- Elects non-permanent members of the Security Council and other UN bodies
- Appoints the UN Secretary-General (on Security Council recommendation)
- Discusses and recommends policies on international peace and security
- Promotes disarmament and global cooperation
- Initiates studies for:
- Development of international law
- Protection of human rights
- Economic, social, cultural, and health cooperation
- Recommends peaceful settlement of disputes
- Reviews reports from UN organs
Role of UNGA President
- Elected annually along with 21 Vice-Presidents
- Serves a one-year term
- Ensures equitable geographical representation
Key Responsibilities
- Presides over plenary sessions and directs discussions
- Maintains order and ensures adherence to rules
- Grants speaking rights and announces decisions
- Can regulate debates by:
- Limiting speaking time
- Closing speaker lists
- Suspending or adjourning sessions
- May delegate responsibilities to Vice-Presidents when required
