World No Tobacco Day 2026: 31 May

Every year on 31 May, World Health Organization and its global partners observe World No Tobacco Day (WNTD). The campaign aims to raise awareness about the harmful and deadly effects of tobacco use and second-hand smoke exposure, while encouraging people to avoid tobacco in all forms.

Theme for 2026: “Unmasking the Appeal – countering tobacco and nicotine addiction”

This theme focuses on exposing the tactics used to make tobacco and nicotine products attractive, especially to younger populations.

  • Nearly 40 million children (13–15 years) use tobacco
  • Adolescents are 9 times more likely to vape than adults (in countries with data)

  • Initiated in 1987 by WHO Member States to highlight the global tobacco epidemic
  • World Health Assembly passed:
    • Resolution WHA40.38 (1987): Declared 7 April 1988 as “World No-Smoking Day”
    • Resolution WHA42.19 (1988): Established 31 May as the annual World No Tobacco Day
